If you haven’t been watching 9 by Design on Bravo, stop reading this and walk over to your TiVo and set it to record now. I was an idiot and didn’t watch because I’ve been so “busy”. A little too much fun on Saturday night made for a not so fun morning Sunday which had me stuck to the couch for a good 4 hour period … lucky me, there was a block of 9 by Design episodes running back to back! The show follows parents Cortney and Robert Novogratz, the owners of Sixx Design, and their family of seven children. The couple does design for hire projects as well as buys old homes and buildings (like a gun shop) and renovates them to create funky, modern spaces that reflect a serious spirit of fun. I love their mix of old and new and their fresh, bright colors. One of the things they always do in their spaces is buy old things at the flea market or an antiques shop and reupholster or paint to make them new. It gives the space a homeyness and sense of history.
They recently published their new book, Downtown Chic, that chronicles their journey as they started Sixx Design and features each of the houses they have renovated. It’s currently on backorder everywhere I looked, but you can pre-order online. (hey – check out that pom-as-chandelier … DIY project!)
Here are some pics from their portfolio … you’ll notice a lot of repeated art and furniture because most of these are houses they actually lived in themselves at some point. They usually buy a property, renovate and rebuild, live there for a year or two and then move on … imagine that with 7 kids!
Fantastic garage-style door opening from living room to back patio.
I’m desperately into this Queen Elizabeth artwork …
contemplating making one of my own …

Loving the industrial-chic look right now …
